Three people were killed and at least 40 others injured in a road accident involving two buses and a drum truck in Rajshahi’s Kharkhari area early Sunday.
The incident occurred around 12:30am in front of Varendra University as two buses carrying around 90 Jamaat-e-Islami activists from Chapainawabganj collided with a truck. One of the buses veered off the road and fell into a ditch, while the other sustained heavy damage and caught fire after being hit by the truck.
The deceased have been identified as Jewel Ahmed (40), Nasim Uddin (45), and Mizanur Rahman (32). All the injured were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where one person was declared dead on arrival, and two others died later.
The passengers were en route to visit the graves of late Jamaat leaders Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, and Abdul Quader Molla.
Fire service personnel, police, and local residents responded quickly to the scene, rescuing the injured and extinguishing the fire. Rajshahi Metropolitan Police spokesperson ADC Sabina Yasmin confirmed the casualty figures.
