Three killed in covered van-CNG collision in Gazipur

Three people were killed and three others injured after a covered van collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Kaliakair of Gazipur.

The accident took place around 10am in the Kanchanpur Chairman Bari Bazar area on the Mawna regional road on Saturday morning (September 5).

The deceased included Asadullah, 26. The identities of the other two deceased could not immediately be confirmed.

The injured were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Shakil, 35, and passengers Khokon Mia, 22, and Asadul Islam, 19.

Police recovered the bodies and seized both vehicles from the scene.

According to locals, the auto-rickshaw was travelling from Kaliakair Bazar towards Mawna with five passengers when it collided with a speeding covered van coming from the opposite direction, according to police and local residents.

The impact sent the auto-rickshaw into a roadside paddy field, where it was badly mangled. Two passengers, including a woman, died at the scene.

The injured were rescued and taken to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex, where another passenger later died.

Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliakair Police Station, said, "Three people were killed and three others injured in the crash. The injured were receiving treatment at the hospital, while legal proceedings were underway."
