Three more die with measles symptoms, death toll reaches 828

Three more people have died from measles in the country. With this, the death toll from measles and its symptoms this year has risen to 828. According to the latest measles bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services, measles was confirmed in 95 of the deceased. The remaining 733 died with measles symptoms.

Division-wise, the highest number of deaths—320—occurred in Dhaka division. This was followed by Sylhet with 107, Rajshahi with 91, Mymensingh with 69, Chattogram with 59, Barishal with 44, Khulna with 32, and Rangpur division with 11.

As of 8am on Tuesday, 105 new cases of measles were confirmed in the last 24 hours. During the same period, 799 people sought treatment at various hospitals across the country with measles symptoms, of whom 787 were admitted. Among the newly admitted patients, 233 were from Dhaka division, 215 from Chattogram, 130 from Barishal, 77 from Sylhet, 45 from Mymensingh, 43 from Khulna, 31 from Rajshahi, and 13 from Rangpur.

So far, a total of 108,441 patients have been hospitalised with measles in the country. Of them, 104,235 have recovered and returned home after treatment.

Although measles cases began appearing at the start of this year, the outbreak spread across the country by the end of February. The DGHS began publishing regular information and statistics on the disease from March 15. According to WHO data, over 25,000 children were affected by measles in Bangladesh in 2005.
