Three members of a family were stabbed in the capital's Banani area after a dispute over an unpaid debt turned violent.

The attack took place around 4:30am in front of the Wireless Shishu Mela School in Mohakhali in the early hours of Saturday morning (June 27).

The victims — Sumon Mia, 45, his wife Sonia, 38, and her brother Rasel, 40 — were rushed to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where they are currently receiving treatment. The family resides in the Mohakhali T&T Colony.

According to police and family sources, the discord started when Sumon's group demanded money owed to them by a man named Arif. The conversation quickly escalated into an argument, after which Arif returned with a gang of eight to ten men and launched a brutal assault on the three victims — beating them and stabbing them before fleeing the scene. Local residents found the injured and rushed them to safety.

Sub-Inspector Md. Jane Alam of Banani Police Station confirmed the incident, saying all three victims remain hospitalised at DMCH.

"Preliminarily, we believe the attack stemmed from a financial dispute," he said, "but we are also investigating whether there are any other motives behind it."

Police said they have launched operations to identify and arrest those responsible.
