Three of same family drown in Lakshmipur pond

Three members of the same family drowned in a pond beside the Lakshmipur-Majuchowdhuryhat road on Sunday afternoon (September 6).

The deceased were Abu Siddique, 50, and his two grandchildren—Piyas Hossain, 9, and Pomi Akter. They were grandfather, grandson and granddaughter.

Police and witnesses said Abu Siddique had gone to the pond to bathe with Piyas and Pomi. At one point, Abu drowned. The two children also drowned while trying to rescue him.

Local residents recovered the bodies of Abu and Pomi after seeing them floating in the pond. Piyas was later rescued and taken to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Dr Arup Pal, resident medical officer at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, confirmed the deaths.

Md Wahid Parvez, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lakshmipur Sadar police station, described the incident as a tragic accident and said the bodies had been recovered.
