Three prisoners die in one day at DMCH

Shahadat Hossain Liton, 52, Abul Bashar, 58, and Abdul Kaiyum, 62, have died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in one day. One of them was an inmate of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail while the other two were inmates of Dhaka Central Jail. They died at separate times on Sunday morning.

Of the three, two were under-trial prisoners and one was a convicted prisoner.

Jail sources said Shahadat Hossain Liton was a resident of Pabla village under Daulatpur police station in Khulna. He was an inmate of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur. He was admitted to DMCH on August 28 after falling ill. Doctors declared him dead around 8:45am on Sunday while under treatment. He was in jail in a case of the Speedy Trial Tribunal and a murder case of Uttara police station.

Abul Bashar was in jail in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Kachua police station in Chandpur. His home is at Kutia Lakshmipur village in Kachua of Chandpur. He was admitted to DMCH about 15 days ago after falling ill. Two days ago he was sent to Dhaka Central Jail after being discharged from the hospital. He fell ill again on Sunday morning and was quickly taken to the emergency department of DMCH. Doctors declared him dead at 7:25am.

Abdul Kaiyum was an inmate of Dhaka Central Jail. He had been sentenced to one year in a cheque dishonour case. He fell ill in jail on Saturday and was taken to hospital for treatment before being returned to jail. His physical condition deteriorated on Sunday morning and jail guards took him to DMCH. Doctors declared him dead at 9:05am.

Md Habibur Rahman, inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said the bodies of the three have been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Faruk Ahmed, senior jail super of Dhaka Central Jail, said one of the three inmates was under treatment at the hospital. The other two had also been ill from earlier. Their condition deteriorated on Sunday and they were taken to the hospital. Doctors later declared them dead.
