Three-member probe body formed over Rajshahi University clash
Rajshahi University (RU) has formed a three-member committee to investigate a clash between students of the Management Studies and Chemistry departments that left at least four Chemistry students injured.
The university administration confirmed the decision late Wednesday night, following clashes and vandalism on the campus.
Professor Saiful Islam of the Crop Science and Technology Department, a former dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, has been appointed convener of the probe committee. Philosophy Department Chairman Professor Ariful Islam and Professor Dr Shah Aluddin, chairman of the Land and Law Administration Department, are the other members.
The committee has been tasked with identifying those involved in the clash and determining the circumstances and underlying causes of the incident.
Assistant Proctor Professor Rafiqul Islam said several students, including Chemistry student Ferdous Hasan, were injured. One of the injured students was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment, he said.
According to university sources, the dispute began over the use of a chair and later escalated into a physical confrontation between students of the two departments.
The clashes took place around 10pm Wednesday behind Nawab Abdul Latif Hall and at the academic buildings of the two departments. At least four Chemistry students sustained injuries and were initially treated at the university medical centre before being referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The university administration said it was taking steps to bring the situation under control and maintain order on campus.
