Three-vehicle collision claims 2 lives in Habiganj

Two people were killed in a three-way collision involving an oil-laden lorry, a sand-laden truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Madhabpur, Habiganj. The accident occurred around 1:30pm on Sunday, August 9, in the Bejura bridge area of the upazila.

The deceased are Ripon Mia, 27, of Ratonpur village in Madhabpur upazila, and Abul Khayer, 50, son of Nasir Uddin from West Madhabpur area.

Police said a head-on collision occurred between an oil-laden lorry and a sand-laden truck on the Bejura bridge around 1:30pm. After the collision, the sand-laden truck lost control and fell on a nearby CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

Ripon Mia, helper of the sand-laden truck, and Abul Khayer, a passenger of the auto-rickshaw, were critically injured and died on the spot.

Police from Madhabpur Police Station, Shayestaganj Highway Police and fire service members reached the scene after receiving news of the accident. They rescued the victims from the vehicles. The bodies were later taken to Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex.

After the accident, traffic on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway was temporarily halted, causing long tailbacks on both sides. Police and fire service members later removed the accident vehicles, restoring normal traffic.

Shayestaganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman said two people died in the three-way collision. Their bodies have been kept at Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex.

The process of handing over the bodies to the families is underway. The three vehicles involved in the accident have been seized. Further legal proceedings are ongoing.
