Thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds up to 60 kmph likely in 10 districts
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast temporary gusty winds and thunderstorms in at least 10 districts, warning that wind speeds may reach up to 60 kilometres per hour in parts of the country.
In a river port warning valid until 1:00pm Tuesday (May 12), the weather office said Dhaka, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Cumilla and Sylhet may experience temporary squalls accompanied by rain or thunderstorms, with winds blowing from the west or northwest at speeds of 45–60 kmph.
Authorities have asked river ports in the affected regions to hoist Local Warning Signal No. 1 and advised vessels operating on inland waterways to remain cautious.
In a separate forecast valid until 6:00pm, the meteorological department said isolated rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds may also occur in parts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
The weather office added that daytime temperatures may rise slightly across the country, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
Meanwhile, the department warned of moderate to very heavy rainfall in three divisions over the next three days under the influence of a low-pressure system currently located over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the North Sri Lanka coast. Its extended trough stretches towards West Bengal and adjoining areas.
The meteorological department has advised farmers and residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning strikes. People have also been urged to avoid open fields, trees and electric poles during lightning activity.
