The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast thunderstorms and rain in 15 districts, including the capital Dhaka, by this evening, prompting cautionary signals for inland river ports.

In a forecast issued on Saturday (June 13) covering the period from 9:00am to 6:00pm, the BMD said several regions may experience temporary gusty or squally winds accompanied by lightning and rain.

The affected areas include Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Bogura, Tangail, Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Mymensingh, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. Wind speeds may reach 45–60 km per hour from the east or southeast.

River ports in these regions have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number one.

In a separate bulletin, the Met Office said many areas in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds and lightning.

Some areas in Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna divisions may also see similar weather activity, while isolated places across the country could experience moderately heavy to heavy rainfall.

The BMD added that day temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged nationwide, while night temperatures may drop slightly.

Authorities have urged caution, particularly in riverine and low-lying areas, as convective weather conditions continue to develop over several regions.
