TIB expresses concern over attack on bauls in Manikganj

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed deep concern over the arrest of Baul musician Abul Sarker and the mob attack on his supporters participating in a peaceful human chain in Manikganj.
The organisation said the incident poses a serious threat to the country’s religious coexistence, communal harmony, and cultural diversity.
In a statement on Monday (November 24), TIB criticised law enforcement for remaining passive during the attacks and the government for its silence, calling this a violation of the rule of law, human rights, freedom of expression, and the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftiekharuzzaman said the attacks should not be seen as isolated incidents but as part of a systematic strategy aimed at suppressing cultural diversity, folk traditions, spiritual practices, and minority beliefs.
He cited recent incidents including vandalism of shrines, exhumation of revered figures, closure of Baul gatherings, seizure of musical instruments, and the banning of theatre and rural fairs. He also noted that state inaction has extended to canceling teachers for music and physical education under pressure from religious extremists.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman added that videos circulating on social media show police were visibly reluctant to intervene, creating a risk of informal endorsement of group violence.
The attacks have left artists and folk practitioners fearful and hesitant, while students in schools and colleges are questioning their freedom to engage in cultural activities.
TIB highlighted that similar recent incidents against the Ahmadiyya community reflect a pattern of planned attacks on religious minorities and cultural diversity.
The organisation urged the government to take a clear stance against mob violence, religious provocation, and cultural suppression, and to ensure exemplary punishment for perpetrators. Otherwise,
TIB warned, the human rights, minority protection, and cultural freedom promised in the vision of a “New Bangladesh” will be at risk.
