The government has proposed making Tax Identification Number (TIN) mandatory for opening bank accounts. The new decision was announced in the national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament on Thursday, June 11.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the budget proposal.

According to the new proposal, any individual opening a bank account must present a TIN certificate. The initiative aims to expand the tax network and strengthen the revenue system, the finance minister said.

However, exemptions have been provided in certain cases. Students opening bank accounts will not require TIN. Similarly, no-frills accounts, government allowance accounts, and pensioner accounts are also exempted from the TIN requirement.

Currently, there are over 17 crore bank accounts in the country. If the new proposal is implemented, TIN will be mandatory for opening new accounts in the future.
