Tk 100 crore defamation case filed against Amir Hamza
A defamation suit seeking Tk 100 crore in damages has been filed against Islamic speaker and MP of Kushtia-3 constituency Amir Hamza over alleged derogatory remarks made against Power and Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.
The case was filed on Monday, March 30, at the Sirajganj Sadar Magistrate Court by Advocate Nazmul Islam, former general secretary of Sadar upazila BNP. Following the hearing, Judge Sumon Kumar Karmakar kept the order pending.
The matter was confirmed by Additional Public Prosecutors Advocate Hamidul Islam Dulal, Advocate Humayun Kabir Kornel and Advocate Indrajit Saha.
According to the case details, during a discussion before Friday prayers on March 27 at the Hafsai Haripur Boro Mosque in Kushtia, Amir Hamza allegedly referred to Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku as an 'atheist'. The statement later spread on social media, and the case claims it has tarnished the minister's family heritage and social standing.
The suit demands Tk 100 crore in compensation. Additionally, a prayer has been filed seeking an arrest warrant against him, taking cognisance of the offence under Section 500 of the Penal Code.
