Tk 4,400 crore proposed for Election Commission in budget

The proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year has allocated Tk 4,400 crore for the Election Commission Secretariat. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the allocation while presenting the budget in the National Parliament on Thursday, June 11.

According to budget documents, this amount will be spent on organising various local government elections and implementing important election-related activities.

The allocated funds will also be used for observing National Voter Day, updating voter lists with photographs, registering Bangladeshi expatriates as voters, and issuing smart National Identity Cards (NID) abroad.

The budget further stated that a portion of this allocation will be spent on establishing necessary cyber security infrastructure and sensor systems to connect the NID system with the Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) platform.

According to the government, the main objectives of this allocation are to modernise the electoral system, expand voter services, and strengthen cyber security of the NID database.
