Tongi dismemberment murder tied to personal feud and insult: Rab

The gruesome murder of Oli Mia, whose dismembered body was found in travel bags near Tongi Station Road, was allegedly driven by personal enmity and offensive remarks about one of the accused's wife, according to the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).

Rab-1 officials revealed the motive at a press briefing held at their Uttara office on Sunday, citing confessions made by the suspects during interrogation.

Oli Mia, 35, was reportedly lured to a residence in Tongi’s Bonmala area on August 6, where he was killed and later dismembered into eight pieces. His remains were discovered two days later, packed in two bags and dumped along the Tongi-Kaliganj regional highway.

Rab arrested three individuals in connection with the murder: Apel Mahmud Sadek, 42, of Karimpur in Narsingdi; his wife Shaon Begum, 32; and Sajjad Hossain Roni, 25. All three had been residing in Tongi and were apprehended in Hathazari, Chattogram, after Rab traced their movements using digital forensic tools.

According to Rab Senior Assistant Police Superintendent Salman Nur Alam, Sadek and Roni initially planned to kill Oli by pushing him under a train. When no train arrived, they returned to Sadek’s home and carried out the murder there. The motive, Rab said, stemmed from Oli’s alleged derogatory remarks about Shaon Begum.

On August 8, as the body began to decompose, the suspects packed the remains into two travel bags and abandoned them on the roadside in the early hours. Police recovered the bags around 9:30am that morning.

Fingerprint analysis conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) led to the identification of the victim. Oli’s wife, Shahana Akter, filed a murder case with Tongi East Police Station yesterday.

Rab officials stated that further investigation is ongoing to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the crime.
