Tongi fire leaves four firefighters injured, two in critical condition
Four firefighters sustained severe burn injuries during working to doused a devastating fire engulfed a chemical warehouse in Tongi’s Sahara Market.
Two of them sustained 100 percent burns and are currently undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Resident surgeon Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman confirmed that Officer Jannatul Nayeem sustained 42 percent burns, while firefighters Nurul Huda and Shamim Ahmed suffered 100 percent burns, and firefighter Joy Hasan was burnt 5 percent.
Fire Service spokesperson Anwarul Islam Dolon said the team rushed in to douse the blaze, unaware it was a chemical warehouse. Moments after they began, an explosion occurred, engulfing them in flames.
The fire broke out around 3:00pm Monday at the semi-pucca tin-shed warehouse. Seven fire units battled for three hours before bringing it under control by 7:00pm. Along with the four firefighters, one other individual was also injured.
