For most ordinary readers, the Nobel Prize in Literature may seem as remote as “a trader of ginger keeping track of ships.” Yet, each year when the prize is announced, curiosity is suddenly rekindled—who has won it, why, and what has the winner written? There is a reason for this interest. Literature, after all, mirrors our lives—our laughter and tears, our love and loss, our hopes and despair. For thoughtful minds, literature is not merely entertainment; it is a deep engagement with life itself. But in this age of social media, where fleeting distraction has replaced reflection, only a handful of people now follow world literature. Even so, when the Nobel announcement arrives, the old excitement returns, and once again, people everywhere begin to discuss, analyse, and wonder. In that sense, the Nobel Prize in Literature remains one of the most anticipated global events in the cultural world.
Has interim govt actually become a ‘government’ in a year
Just two days before the anniversary of the July uprising, on the afternoon of August 3, at a rally organised at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital to declare the manifesto of the 'Second Republic' or New Bangladesh, several leaders of the National Citizens' Party (NCP) expressed discontent and criticism over unfulfilled expectations in various sectors over the past year. Yet the NCP is considered the main stakeholder or participant in the interim government. The government itself has, at various times, indicated its special preference or support for this party. One reason may be that the NCP was formed through the initiative of some youths who were at the forefront of the July uprising.
Accountability and transparency are key to good governance
The people of Bangladesh sought inclusive participation in development activities. Our people fought for a fair, inclusive, and effective democracy, for which the new generation sacrificed their lives. Initially, the student and youth movements were primarily anti-discrimination movements, but over time, they evolved into a mass movement, as noted by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. According to him, this mass movement united the general public, who were deprived of political rights and the benefits of development. It was from a deep belief in liberalism, pluralism, and secularism that the state of Bangladesh emerged. The values that our people embraced in the 1971 Liberation War were revived and seen in a new light by our student community many years later. Through their indomitable determination and resolve, the student community freed us from an authoritarian and undemocratic regime.
