Writer and researcher Mohiuddin Ahmad is at once a historian and a valiant freedom fighter. Among those who have written, analysed and researched most extensively on the political context of post-independence Bangladesh, he is one of the foremost. He is the only political writer in Bangladesh to have written a book on the 1973 election, titled The Election of ’73. He has also authored Red Terror: Siraj Sikder and Proletarian Politics, The Anti-hero Sirajul Alam Khan, Awami League and BNP: Which Way, The Rise and Fall of JASAD: Politics of Unstable Times and several other works. He continues to write on contemporary politics.
Revolutionary slogans capture attention at book fair
At the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2025, one of the most striking elements for visitors has been the posters displaying slogans from Bangladesh’s largest-ever mass uprising, which took place in 2024. These posters, featuring revolutionary messages, have been seen at various key locations from Shahbagh intersection to the entrances of Bangla Academy and Suhrawardy Udyan.

When we think of the two major events that embody the spirit and celebration of the Bengali people, one of them is the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, which runs throughout the month of February at the Bangla Academy and adjacent Suhrawardy Udyan. The other is Pohela Boishakh.
Police's comment on book publishing audacious
I am not sure if any police force in the world has ever made such a comment before! But Bangladesh's police made an shocking statement, asking the Bangla Academy to verify manuscripts before books are published. On Friday, after observing the security situation of this year’s book fair at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sazzad Ali made this remark to journalists. After hearing his comment, poets and writers across the country are writing on social media, expressing their confusion over whether to call his statement unfortunate or ridiculous. Some are even asking, "Is it still the police of the Awami League era?"
