Tourist drowns in Tanguar Haor
A tourist has died after drowning while bathing in the Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj. The incident took place around 4:30pm on Friday, August 7, near the watchtower area of the Haor.
The deceased has been identified as Ali Akbar Khan, 72, son of the late Ahmed Ali Khan of Gunergati village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila. He was currently a resident of Block B-1 of Jahangir Nagar Housing Society in Savar, Dhaka.
Khairul Hasan, son-in-law of the deceased, said Ali Akbar Khan, along with his wife and 32 other tourists from Dhaka, had come to visit Tanguar Haor this morning from Madan in Netrakona. He said his father-in-law had a heart condition. In the afternoon, while bathing, holding onto a korch tree near the watchtower, he suddenly lost his grip and began to sink. He suffered a heart attack due to panic. He later died on the way to hospital.
Tahirpur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Nashad Ahmed said a tourist was brought to the hospital for treatment, but he had already died before arrival.
Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed said preliminary information suggests Ali Akbar Khan was bathing near a tree when his grip slipped and he sank. As no complaint was filed, the body was handed over to his wife.
