Tourist's body recovered from Nikli Haor two days after drowning

The body of a tourist who went missing while swimming in the waters of Nikli Haor in Kishoreganj has been recovered two days after the incident, authorities said on Sunday (July 12).

The deceased, Shafiqul Islam Tulu, 28, from Kapasia upazila in Gazipur, was found floating in the Ghorautra River near Kathalia under Dhampara Union at around 6:30am, according to the Fire Service.

Officials said Tulu had gone missing on Friday afternoon after entering the haor to swim with two companions while visiting the area with a group of 20 to 25 tourists from Gazipur.The group had travelled to Nikli Haor for a recreational trip.

Police said their boat developed an engine failure near Kathalia, prompting three members of the group, including Tulu, to get into the water for a swim. During the outing, Tulu drowned and disappeared beneath the surface.

Firefighter Ahsan Habib of Nikli Fire Service said local fishermen spotted the body about two kilometres from the site where he had gone missing and alerted authorities. Fire Service personnel later recovered the body.

Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nikli Police Station, said, "Legal procedures are underway into this matter."
