Traffic back to normal after police disperse Mirpur protesters
Police dispersed protesters who attempted to block the road at Mirpur 10 roundabout in the capital on Friday evening, May 22, bringing the situation under control with traffic returning to normal.
The incident occurred around 6 pm when a group of protesters tried to block the road, disrupting vehicular movement. Police intervened and dispersed them, with some protesters seen being beaten with batons.
Protests had been ongoing since noon in Pallabi over the brutal rape and murder of a child, with demonstrators demanding swift justice and the maximum punishment for the culprits.
After Jumma prayers, locals began protesting in front of the victim's house in Pallabi. Later, around 2 pm, the protesters moved to the Mirpur 10 roundabout, causing slow traffic in Mirpur and surrounding areas.
Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman told media that protesters had been demonstrating for a long time. They were not obstructed while protesting peacefully, though traffic moved slowly. However, when they began blocking the road completely, creating a traffic jam, police dispersed them and cleared the road.
