Train derailment disrupts rail link between Sylhet and the rest of the country
A railway disruption has severed train communication between Sylhet and the rest of Bangladesh after a fuel wagon derailed inside a forest area in Moulvibazar on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3:30pm in the Lauachhara National Park area, located between Vanugach and Sreemangal stations in Kamalganj upazila. A wagon of a fuel-carrying train went off the tracks, causing major disruption to rail operations.
Railway officials confirmed that the derailment has suspended train movement on the Sylhet route. Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway, but authorities said it may take time to fully restore service. A relief train has already been dispatched from Kulaura to assist in the recovery process.
According to railway sources, the train—an oil tanker service traveling from Sylhet toward Akhaura—experienced derailment of a rear wagon inside the forested stretch of the railway line. As a result, rail connectivity between Sylhet and the rest of the country has been completely cut off.
Several intercity trains, including the Dhaka-bound “Jayantika Express” from Sylhet, were left stranded at Sreemangal station following the incident.
Railway authorities have informed relevant departments and are working to clear the tracks as soon as possible.
