Train services resume after 8 hrs, probe committee formed
Train services on the Dhaka–Chattogram and Dhaka–Sylhet routes resumed after eight hours on Tuesday. Operations restarted around 12:00pm when the stranded Parjatan Express left Bhairab for Chattogram.
Railway officials are examining whether negligence by a lineman caused the derailment. A four-member investigation committee has already been formed.
Divisional Railway Manager Kamruzzaman confirmed the details at around 1:00pm.
According to Bhairab Railway Station sources, the Dhaka Mail-2 down train left Kamalapur Railway Station for Chattogram at 11:45pm on Monday and reached Bhairab at 2:40am. After a 40-minute halt, it departed at 3:20am. Minutes later, near a signal point close to the station, the front two wheels of the fourth coach from the engine derailed.
Following the incident, all train movement between Dhaka and the eastern zone was suspended. Due to the disruption, the Parjatan Express and Egaro Sindur Express remained stranded at Bhairab, while several other trains were stuck at Kuliarchar, Daulatkandi, Khana Bazar and Brahmanbaria stations.
Kamruzzaman said a relief train from Akhaura carried out recovery operations from 8:00am, adding that single-line operation has temporarily restored normal movement on the affected routes.
