A sub-inspector (SI) named Jiban Rahman, 45, has died of illness during training at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi. He fell ill while running as part of his training on Monday afternoon (June 8). Jiban Rahman joined the Bangladesh Police in 2006.

Police academy sources said that the training SIs were scheduled to run a one-kilometer race on Monday afternoon. Jiban Rahman suddenly fell ill while running around 4:40pm and sat down on the field. His colleagues quickly rescued him and took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas, in-charge and spokesperson of the emergency department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said that it is initially believed that the SI had suffered a heart attack. However, it is not possible to say for sure the specific cause of death without an autopsy. Since no one has filed any complaint, the body has been handed over to the police without an autopsy.

Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajpara Police Station in Rajshahi city, said he had heard about the matter. Abdul Malek, officer-in-charge (OC) of Charghat Police Station, said the next decision would be taken after discussing with higher authorities.

No official statement was received from the principal, deputy principal and superintendent of police (administration) of Bangladesh Police Academy.
