Transformer explosion burns 3 in Gazipur

Three people got severe burns after an electrical transformer exploded in Sreepur Upazila on Wednesday night, triggering a fire that spread to a nearby market.

The identities of the injured could not be confirmed immediately.

The incident occurred around 10:45 pm when a transformer mounted on an electric pole in front of Shahid Super View Market at the Maona intersection exploded, locals said.

The fire that followed quickly spread to the surrounding area, burning goods in several shops of the market.

Inspector Nurul Karim of Sreepur Fire Service said two firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after about half an hour of effort.

The injured were rescued and initially taken to a local hospital for treatment before being referred to Dhaka for further care, he said.

The extent of the damage could not be determined immediately.
