A fire broke out following an explosion in a transformer of the main power grid line in Satkhira, leaving the entire district without electricity since 11am on Saturday (September 20).

According to the fire service, the explosion occurred at 11:10am at the 132/33 KV power grid line station in Binapota area of Sadar upazila. The fire started immediately afterwards. On information, two units of Satkhira Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after about an hour of effort. No casualties were reported in the incident.

Rasel Islam, in-charge of the Satkhira grid line, said power supply across the district was cut off due to the transformer explosion. He expressed hope that the supply would be restored by evening.

Nurul Islam, warehouse inspector of Satkhira fire service, said, “Primarily, it is being assumed that overheating or an electrical short circuit in the transformer caused the fire.”

Meanwhile, the sudden blackout has severely disrupted life in both urban and rural areas. Mills, factories, businesses and daily activities have been affected.
