An attack was launched on a group of 'transgenders' in the capital's Shahbagh area. The incident took place in front of the Bangladesh National Museum at 8:30 pm on Friday (April 10).

Eyewitnesses said that a group of 'transgenders' gather in that area every Friday evening to chat. At that time, they started arguing with some people. At one stage, the situation heated up and turned into a clash.

The victims alleged that Ali Hossain Tanmoy, treasurer of Dhaka University Khelafat Chhatra Majlis, organized some people under the banner of 'Azadi Andolon' and attacked the 'transgenders'. At that time, some 'transgenders' were beaten up. Later, the police brought the situation under control.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station Md. Moniruzzaman said that the situation is currently normal and the law enforcement agencies are monitoring the incident.

An eyewitness to the incident said that 'transgenders' gather in Shahbagh every Friday. They chat. People from the so-called 'Azadi Movement' object to this. They say that they feel uncomfortable if 'transgenders' are here.

Meanwhile, in a video of the incident that has spread on social media, the attackers can be heard saying, 'You will not come here again. Leave here. If you come to establish homosexuality.'
