An indefinite transport strike has been called in Sylhet division in protest against the filing of a case against leaders of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation's Sylhet divisional committee.

The strike will begin on May 19 if the case is not withdrawn by May 18, said Delwar Hossain, acting president of the federation's Sylhet divisional committee, on Friday, May 15.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the committee on Thursday night, May 14.

Earlier on April 27, two factions of transport workers clashed repeatedly in the terminal area, resulting in two workers dying from injuries sustained in the violence. The father of one of the deceased workers, Chhablu Mia, filed a case at Dakshin Surma Police Station on May 5, naming 29 individuals, including the federation's Sylhet divisional committee president Haji Moynul Islam, joint general secretary Ali Akbar Razan, treasurer Abdus Shahid, former treasurer Samshul Haque Manik and former organising secretary Nur Mia, along with 60 unnamed others.

The transport worker leaders have demanded the withdrawal of this case. The meeting decided that if the case is not withdrawn by May 18, an indefinite transport strike will begin from 6:00 am on May 19.

Leaders and activists of transport worker organisations from Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj attended the meeting.
