A court has imposed a travel ban on Mostafa Kamal, Chairman of Meghna Group, over allegations of irregularities and corruption.

The order was issued on Tuesday (May 27) by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, following a petition submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC’s Public Relations Officer, Akhtarul Islam, confirmed the information to the media.

On behalf of the ACC, Deputy Director Monirul Islam filed the petition in court requesting a ban on Mostafa Kamal’s travel abroad. The petition stated that an investigation is ongoing regarding allegations of embezzlement of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from various banks, involving Saima Wazed Putul, Chairperson of the Shuchona Foundation, and others.

Names of several members of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family, including Sajeeb Wazed Joy, a trustee of the Center for Research and Information (CRI), have also come up in connection with the allegations. It is further alleged that state funds were misused to support political agendas.

To investigate these allegations, the ACC has formed a seven-member inquiry team. The investigation has revealed that Mostafa Kamal and his family may try to flee the country.

The ACC believes that if Mostafa Kamal leaves the country, the ongoing investigation could be obstructed. Therefore, in the interest of a proper investigation, the court was requested to impose a travel ban on him.
