Trawler sinks in Bay of Bengal; 9 fishermen rescued, 3 missing
A trawler sank in the southeastern Bay of Bengal after being caught in a sudden storm near Patharghata, Barguna. Out of the 12 fishermen on board, nine have been rescued while three remain missing.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on Thursday. The rescued fishermen were brought ashore by another trawler.
Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Fishermen Trawler Owners Association, said the fishermen had set out fishing on the FB Saikul trawler, owned by Alamgir Khalifa of Khalifahat in Charduani Union, Patharghata Upazila. The fishermen were asleep after casting their nets when the storm hit.
The trawler capsized in the storm, forcing the fishermen to jump into the sea. Nine were rescued by a nearby trawler, but three are still unaccounted for.
Rescue efforts are ongoing.
