Truck breakdown causes 20km traffic jam on Dhaka-Sylhet highway
A truck carrying sand broke down early Thursday morning on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria, causing a traffic jam stretching nearly 20 kilometers. The incident led to severe suffering for passengers, drivers, and traders, who remained stuck for several hours.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the Sylhet-bound truck suddenly broke down around 3:30 AM near the Bishwaroad roundabout area. As a result, traffic was restricted to only one lane, significantly slowing vehicle movement. The situation worsened due to the poor condition of the road, riddled with potholes, eventually bringing traffic to a near standstill by dawn.
Highway police reached the spot around 5:00 AM and attempted to create an alternative route by dumping soil beside the broken-down truck. However, multiple vehicles got stuck while trying to use that route. Those vehicles were later removed using a wrecker. At around 8:00 AM, members of the army joined efforts to restore traffic flow.
The stranded truck was finally removed around 9:15 AM, but the resulting tailback extended from Baertola through Bishwaroad and Kuttapara up to Shahbazpur, covering nearly 20 kilometers. Due to slow-moving traffic and the damaged road, normal flow had not been restored as of noon.
Officer-in-Charge of Sarail-Khatihata Highway Police Station, Jahangir Alam, stated, “If the potholes at Bishwaroad are filled and the roadside is leveled, such traffic jams can be greatly reduced. We are doing our utmost to keep traffic moving.”
