Two arrested over murder of Pir Shamim in Kushtia: Police

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the mob beating and murder of Pir Shamim Reza Jahangir at his darbar in Daulatpur, Kushtia. The arrests were made from the Filipnagar area of the upazila on Sunday night, according to police on Monday, April 27.

The arrested individuals were identified as Bipul, 26, and Alif Islam, 23, of Paschim-Dakkhin Filipnagar.

A murder case was filed on April 13 over the killing of Pir Shamim Jahangir following allegations of religious defamation in Daulatpur. The victim's elder brother, retired school teacher Fazlur Rahman, filed the case at Daulatpur Police Station, naming four individuals and approximately 200 unnamed people as accused.

Jamaat-e-Islami's nominated candidate for chairman of Filipnagar Union Parishad and former district president Muhammad Khaja Ahmed was made the main accused in the case, while Bangladesh Khilafat Majlish leader Asaduzzaman was named as the second accused.

Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman confirmed that the arrests were based on an analysis of CCTV footage from the day of the incident and police investigation.

On April 11, a mob attacked the darbar of Pir Shamim Reza Jahangir in Daulatpur following claims of religious defamation. They vandalised, looted, and set fire to the premises before dragging the pir out and beating him to death.
