Two Bangladeshis including college student killed in BSF firing at Kasba border
Two Bangladeshis, including a college student, have been killed in firing by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Dhaznagar border in Kasba upazila, Brahmanbaria. The incident occurred around 11:15 pm on Friday, May 8, on the Indian side of the border.
One of the deceased has been identified as Md Morshalin, 22, son of Hebzu Mia of the Dhaznagar Batanbari area in Gopinathpur union, and a student of the local Shah Alam Degree College. The identity of the other deceased could not be known immediately.
Family members of Morshalin claimed that several locals had called him out of the house at night and taken him to the border area. When patrolling BSF troops opened fire, Morshalin was hit and killed. They also alleged that the BSF later took his body inside Indian territory.
Border Guard Bangladesh, however, said the deceased were involved in smuggling. An estimated 15 Bangladeshi smugglers, with the help of their Indian counterparts, entered Indian territory through the Dhaznagar border late Friday night to bring in various goods, including phensedyl bottles.
Commander of BGB's 60 battalion, S M Shariful Islam, said the BSF stopped the smugglers as they were returning. An altercation broke out between the two sides, leading to a clash. The BSF later opened fire, killing Morshalin on the spot. Another Bangladeshi was wounded and later died at an Indian hospital.
The BGB is in communication with the BSF to repatriate the bodies. A protest note has been sent to the BSF, and a flag meeting has also been initiated.
