Two Brac University students drown in Munshiganj pond

Two Brac University students have died after drowning in a pond while bathing during a visit to a friend's house in the West Deobhog area of Munshiganj municipality on Friday afternoon, May 22.

The deceased have been identified as Labib Wadi Sopan, 23, a sixth-semester student of the CSE department, and Ajwat Tawsif, 24. Labib's home is in Munshiganj, while Ajwat's home is in Dhaka.

According to Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Muhammad Safiqul Islam, a group of 15 Brac University students had come from Dhaka to visit a friend's house. Six to seven of them went into the pond to bathe, while others stayed by the pond.

At one point, Labib Wadi Sopan and Ajwat Tawsif went missing underwater. Friends and locals recovered them and rushed them to Munshiganj General Hospital, where the duty doctor declared them dead.

Munshiganj Sadar Police Station OC Mominul Islam said the bodies were kept at the hospital. The family of one victim was on their way from Dhaka, and legal procedures for handing over the bodies would be taken after speaking with the families.
