Two British-Bangladeshi candidates win key London Councils polls

Two British-Bangladeshi candidates secured landmark victories in the United Kingdom’s local government elections held on Thursday (May 7), winning key executive mayoral races in East London councils with large Bangladeshi communities.

According to the results, announced on Friday (May 8), Farhad Hossain of the Labour Party was elected executive mayor of Newham Council with 25,538 votes, becoming the first British-Bangladeshi candidate from a major UK political party to win the position.

Meanwhile, Lutfur Rahman of the Aspire Party was re-elected mayor of Tower Hamlets Council, securing 35,679 votes.

Farhad Hossain made history defeating Newham Independent Party candidate Kamran Malik, who received 20,234 votes. Another British-Bangladeshi candidate, Green Party contender Arik Chowdhury, finished third with 18,999 votes among a total of eight candidates.

In Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman retained his strong political foothold, winning re-election with 35,679 votes. His closest rival, Labour Party candidate Sirajul Islam, secured 19,454 votes. Green Party candidate Hira Khan Adeogun finished third in the nine-candidate race. Besides Rahman and Sirajul Islam, two other British-Bangladeshi candidates also contested the mayoral election.

A significant number of British-Bangladeshi candidates participated across 136 local authorities, including boroughs such as Barking and Dagenham Council and Redbridge Council.

Beyond the success of individual candidates, the election outcome has also raised concerns for Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the ruling Labour Party, which reportedly lost ground in several traditional strongholds.

Meanwhile, the right-wing, led by Nigel Farage, emerged as one of the biggest gainers in the local polls.

According to UK media reports, the party has already won nearly 400 council seats, signalling a potential shift in Britain’s political landscape ahead of future national elections.
