Two brothers clash over father's grave, mother forced out of home
An elderly mother has been forced out of her home following a clash between her two sons over their father's burial plot in Keshabpur, Jashore. Before she could even overcome the grief of losing her husband, Nurjahan Begum was compelled to leave her home and has now taken shelter at her daughter's house.
The incident took place on Monday morning, August 24, in the Sannyasgacha village of Gaurighona union in Keshabpur upazila.
Local sources said the body of Nurjahan Begum's husband, Abdul Khaleq Maner, was kept on the veranda of the house. While relatives were preparing for the burial, a dispute erupted between sons Mahabur Rahman and Asabur Rahman over the burial plot for their father. At one point, the two brothers, along with their relatives, were involved in a clash. Five people from both sides were injured and hospitalised.
Following this, allegations arose that Nurjahan Begum was forced out of her home by her two sons. Unable to enter the house, she has taken shelter at her daughter's home in the Garvanga village of Panjia union. The distance from her own home to her daughter's house is about 12 kilometres.
Nurjahan alleged that her sons are not allowing her to enter the house and are even denying her food. A 27-second video of her statement spread on social media on Tuesday morning, drawing various reactions online.
When contacted regarding the allegations, Mahabur Rahman and Asabur Rahman were not found at their homes. Asabur's son, Al Amin, said his father was outside for medical treatment. He added that his elder uncle had filed a case, which is why he did not return home.
Pankaj Chakraborty, ward member of Gaurighona Union Parishad, said he had heard about the incident. He said efforts would be made to resolve the matter locally.
Roksana Khatun, Officer-in-Charge of Keshabpur Police Station, said she was not aware of the woman being denied entry to her home. However, she said legal action would be taken if the woman files a complaint. Meanwhile, Mahabur Rahman, injured in the clash, has filed a complaint with the police station.
