Mahabur Rahman Man and Ashabur Rahman Man, two brothers, have got involved in a fight over land dispute leaving their father’s body at home in Keshabpur of Jashore. Two brothers and several members of their families have been injured in the clash and admitted to hospital. Later the body of the elderly man was buried with the cooperation of the local people under police intervention.
This incident occurred in Sannyasgacha village of Gaurighona Union under Keshabpur upazila on Monday (August 24). The age of the deceased Abdul Khalek Man was 90 years.
It is learnt from local and police sources that four-five years ago the elder son of Abdul Khalek Man, Mahabur Rahman Man, registered all the property of the father including the homestead and family graveyard in his own name. Later he built a new house about half a kilometre away from the house and started living separately.
Afterwards through the mediation of village elders the younger brother Ashabur Rahman Man bought the old homestead and graveyard from the elder brother. He was living there by building houses. In the last days of life the ailing father was with the elder son Mahabur.
When Abdul Khalek died in the morning on Monday Mahabur went to dig a grave to bury the father in the old family graveyard. At this time the younger brother Ashabur obstructed the digging of the grave. He claimed ownership of the graveyard land on the basis of buying the land.
Over this at one stage of the argument between the two brothers the relatives of both sides got involved in a clash. In this the elder brother Mahabur Rahman, his wife Momtaz Begum and daughter Lilima Khatun and the younger brother Ashabur Rahman and his wife Halima Begum were injured. Later they were admitted to hospital.
Due to the clash the burial of the body of the elderly man also became uncertain. Later under police intervention and with the cooperation of the local people the body was buried in the old family graveyard itself.
Roksana Khatun, Officer-in-Charge of Keshabpur Police Station, said the two brothers got involved in a clash over land division-related dispute leaving the father’s body at home. In this several persons of both sides were injured and admitted to hospital. Later the body of the elderly man has been buried with the cooperation of the local people.
