Two children drown in Padma river in Chapainawabganj

Two children drowned in the Padma river in Sadar upazila, Chapainawabganj, on Friday morning, June 12. The deceased were identified as Jesmin, 8, also known as Karima, daughter of Jahurul Islam from Tikli Char area, and Israt Khatun, 7, also known as Buri, daughter of late Kajor from Chakpara village.

According to local sources, the three children went to bathe in the river without their families' knowledge. Jesmin and Israt, who did not know how to swim, drowned while their companion Mahin, 6, returned home to inform the family. After family members and locals failed to find them, the fire service was contacted.

A diving team from Rajshahi Fire Service arrived at the scene, recovering Jesmin's body around 2:45 pm and Israt's body around 4:30 pm.

Fire Service diving team leader Abdur Razzak said the children drowned after going into the river to bathe.

Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ekramul Hossain confirmed the incident, saying police and river police are completing necessary legal procedures.
