Two children drown in pit dug for brick kiln in Fatikchhari
Two children have died after drowning in water accumulated in a pit dug for a brick kiln in Harualchhari union, Fatikchhari upazila, Chattogram. The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Sunday, April 5, in the Kalim Baper Bari area under Bhujpur police station.
The deceased children are Saki, 9, and Sanjida, 11. They were daughters of local residents Habibur Rahman and Zakir Hossain.
According to local sources, water had accumulated in a large pit created by soil extraction for a brick kiln. The children accidentally fell into the pit while playing in the area. Another child who was with them ran home to inform others. Locals rushed to the spot and recovered them, but they had already died.
Harualchhari Union Parishad Chairman Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury said these pits created by soil extraction for brick kilns have remained hazardous for a long time. Such accidents occur due to a lack of proper safety measures.
Bhujpur Police Station OC Bipul Chandra De said Bangladesh Police have visited the spot following the incident.
