Two children drown in separate pond incidents in Sreepur

Two children have died after drowning in separate ponds in Sreepur, Gazipur, on Friday, May 8. The incidents have cast a pall of mourning over the area.

The deceased are Jihad Hasan, 6, son of Zakir Hossain of Nagarhaola village in Gazipur union, and Sweety Akter, 14, daughter of Rafiqul Islam of Sakhua village in Trishal upazila, Mymensingh. Sweety's family lived in a rented house in the South Dhanua area, and both her parents work in garment factories.

Jihad was a student of the kindergarten section at Nagarhaola Government Primary School. Locals said Jihad went to play by the pond near his house before Friday prayers. When he did not return for a long time, family members began searching for him. They spotted his pair of shoes on the pond bank and later recovered his body from the water.

In the other incident, Sweety Akter went to take a bath in a pond with her classmates in the South Dhanua area, where she drowned.

Sreepur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nasir Ahmed said no one had informed police about the two drowning incidents. He said they would send police to the spots to gather details.
