Two CUET students drown to death in university pond

Two students of Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) drowned and died in a campus pond around 1:30pm near the Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall on Wednesday.

The victims are Shanto Deb from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Arnab Dutta from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Both were students of the 2024–25 academic year.

According to reports, the two students went down into the pond to bathe with friends and eventually submerged underwater. One was rescued after 8 to 10 minutes, while the other was pulled out after approximately 40 to 50 minutes. They were initially taken to the university medical center and later transferred to Evercare Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Professor Saiful Islam, director of the CUET Directorate of Student Welfare, confirmed the deaths, stating that their families have been informed and further steps will be taken according to their decisions.

Previously, on July 28, another student from the Mechanical Engineering Department, Arnab Saha, died from drowning in the same pond. Following that incident, university authorities had promised to install safety barriers and expand the banks of the pond.
