Two students of a residential madrasah in Gomastapur Upazila of Chapainawabganj suddenly fell ill and died around 4:30am on Saturday (August 16) while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The deceased were identified as Tania Khatun (12), daughter of Tariqul Islam from Lebudanga village under Radhanagar Union, and Jamila Khatun (10), daughter of Sabur Ali from Begpur village in the same union. Both were residential students at Shefali Begum Mohila Nurani Hafizia Madrasah in Dubar Mor.

According to madrasah sources, 13 students were sleeping together on Friday night. Suddenly, Tania and Jamila fell seriously ill and began vomiting. The madrasah authorities quickly took them to Gomastapur Upazila Health Complex. There, doctors initially declared Jamila dead. Tania later died while undergoing treatment.

Dr. Abdul Alim, medical officer at Gomastapur Upazila Health Complex, said, “The two students were brought to the hospital around 3:30am. Jamila had already passed away before arrival, and Tania died during treatment. Tania had marks on her legs, and Jamila’s body appeared yellowish. It is suspected that they may have been bitten by a poisonous animal. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after a post-mortem.”

Ashraf Ali, director of the madrasah, said, “All students went to bed normally on Friday night, but when two became suddenly ill early in the morning, they were immediately taken to the hospital. The doctors declared them dead.”

Wadud Alam, OC of Gomastapur Police Station, said, “Preliminary reports indicate they may have died from bites of a poisonous creature. The exact cause of death is still under investigation, and legal proceedings are ongoing.”
