Two held over killing of teacher's family of four in Rangpur
Police have detained two men in connection with the killing of a former Rangpur Zilla School teacher, his wife and their two children in the city's Machuapara area.
The detainees have been identified as Siddhartha and Mugdho. A police source said they are residents of the same area.
The two were detained after an overnight operation that continued until early Sunday (August 23).
Investigators are examining whether the suspects had stayed inside the house and used drugs after the killings, with sources saying some evidence to that effect had been found.
However, police have yet to establish their direct involvement in the murders.
According to a source, one of the two suspects fled to Tutbagan of the Silk Development Board after sensing the law enforcement operation. He was later detained from the Dakhiganj cremation ground area.
Investigators suspect that a group of local youths may have entered the house with an intention to commit robbery and killed the four occupants. The motive and the identities of those responsible, however, have yet to be conclusively established.
The bodies of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, daughter Prarthi Chakraborty and son Priyam Chakraborty were recovered from their house in Machuapara on Saturday night (August 22).
Police initially suspected that the four had been strangled. Several rooms of the house were found ransacked, while places where valuables were kept showed signs of damage.
Investigators believe the killings took place several days before the bodies were discovered. The incident came to light after relatives became concerned when the family stopped responding to calls and a foul smell began coming from the house.
The CID crime scene unit has collected evidence from the scene, while teams from Rangpur Metropolitan Police and intelligence agencies are investigating the case.
Police have not yet disclosed further details about the two detainees. Authorities may brief the media on the latest developments at a press conference on Sunday afternoon (August 23).
