Two injured, four arrested during police operation in Dhaka

Two alleged criminals were shot in the legs and four people were arrested during a police operation in Dhaka’s Adabor early Tuesday following a reported attack on a house involving machetes.

The operation was carried out around 2am in the canal-side area behind the fairground near the Nobodoy Housing kitchen market, police said.

Adabor police station OC Md Zahidul Islam Jahangir said police received information that suspects in a case involving an attack, vandalism and extortion at a house in Shekertek were hiding in the area.

A police team rushed to the spot and surrounded a group of seven to eight people, the officer said. When police moved to arrest them, the suspects allegedly tried to attack the officers with machetes and other sharp weapons.

Police then fired two rounds from a shotgun carried by Constable Moshrekul Islam in what the OC described as an act of self-defence. Two of the suspects were shot in the legs.

Police subsequently arrested the two injured men along with two others, while the remaining suspects fled the scene.

The injured suspects, identified as Rajib and Sagar, also known as Chhoto Bigar, were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Police said Rajib Howlader is the accused No. 1 in the case filed over the murder of Babu in Mohammadpur. Sagar has eight cases against him at Adabor and Mohammadpur police stations, while Shakib and Rashed each face five cases, according to police.

Police also recovered steel machetes, a samurai sword and a kirich from the scene. Further legal action is underway, including the filing of additional cases over the incident.
