Two inmates die at DMCH after falling ill in Keraniganj jail

Two inmates of Keraniganj Central Jail died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday night (September 20), hospital police said.

The deceased were identified as Sohrab Hossain, 55, and Md Azim Uddin, 32.

Inspector Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said they died at separate times while receiving treatment.

Sohrab, a convicted prisoner with inmate number 718/A, fell ill in jail on September 14 and was transferred to DMCH on the authorities’ orders. He was admitted to Ward 602 of the medicine department, where he later died. He was from Rangamati village in Naogaon’s Manda upazila.

Azim, an undertrial prisoner with inmate number 758/A, fell ill on Sunday and was taken to the hospital’s emergency department. He was later admitted to Ward 601 and died at around 12:15am.

Azim was from Shantipara in Dhaka’s Ashulia area.

A prison guard who brought the two men to the hospital said their respective cases were not immediately known.

Inspector Habibur Rahman said the bodies were kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsies. Inquest reports will be prepared in the presence of an executive magistrate before the post-mortems, after which the bodies will be handed over to their families.
