Two killed, 30 injured in Brahmanbaria clash
Two people, including a mosque imam, have been killed in a clash between two groups over previous enmity in Goalmagar union, Nasirnagar upazila, Brahmanbaria. At least 30 others were injured in the incident.
The clash began around 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 24, and continued for about four hours. The injured are receiving treatment at Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex and other facilities.
The deceased are local Jame Mosque imam Habibur Rahman and businessman Akhtar Mia.
Police and local sources said the dispute originated over allegations of irregularities at a polling centre on the day of the 13th National Parliamentary Election. At that time, a mobile court sentenced BNP supporter Ziaur Rahman to 10 days in prison after detaining him. Tension had been running high between the two groups for a long time over suspicion of the rival group in that incident.
Following this, a clash occurred a few days ago as well. On Tuesday morning, members of the Rahim Talukdar group and Kashem Mia group engaged in a clash using sharp weapons and spears. Two people died from spear wounds, and many others were injured.
Resident Medical Officer Shafiqul Islam said several of the seriously injured have been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Shah Md Abdur Rouf said the clash occurred due to previous enmity, and police are working to bring the situation under control.
