Two killed as passenger bus slams into broken-down truck on Bogura Highway

Two people were killed and at least seven others injured after a Dhaka-bound passenger bus crashed into the rear of a broken-down truck on the Dhaka–Bogura Highway in Sherpur upazila late Sunday night (August 2).

The accident occurred around 11:30pm in the Chhonka Bazar area, according to police and fire service officials.

The deceased were identified as Noyon, 38, the assistant driver of the Jamuna Line Paribahan bus and a resident of Jahanpur village in Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon, and Masudur Rahman, 38, a vegetable trader from Chanpuri village in the same upazila.

According to preliminary findings, the truck had been left stationary on the highway after developing a mechanical fault. The Jamuna Line bus, travelling from Joypurhat to Dhaka, slammed into the rear of the disabled vehicle, causing severe damage to the front of the bus.

Both victims died at the scene from the impact.

Fire Service personnel rushed to the site and carried out a rescue operation before transporting the injured to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for treatment.

The bodies of the two victims were handed over to the Sherpur Highway Police.

Sub-Inspector Sajjadul Islam of the Sherpur Highway Police Outpost said investigators suspect the bus was travelling at high speed and the driver failed to notice the stationary truck in time.

"The exact cause of the crash is being investigated," he said.

Police have seized both the bus and the truck, while legal proceedings are underway.
