Two killed in bus collision in Sylhet
Two people were killed after a passenger bus crashed into the rear of a stationary bus on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet early Sunday.
The accident occurred near Tajpur Bazar in the early hours of May 31.
The deceased were identified as Sohel, 30, the driver of a Jatayat Paribahan bus, and Imon, 20, the bus helper. Sohel was the son of Tajul Islam from Shahi Pratap village in Narsingdi Sadar upazila.
According to police, a Jatayat Paribahan bus (Dhaka Metro-B-15-0602) was parked on the side of the highway while heading toward Sylhet. At that time, a speeding Saint Martin Souhardya Paribahan bus (Dhaka Metro-B-11-0241), traveling in the same direction, rammed into the rear of the stationary vehicle.
The collision left both buses severely damaged. Sohel died on the spot, while Imon succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital after being rescued from the wreckage.
Confirming the incident, Sherpur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Taher Dewan said highway police and local law enforcement rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Traffic movement on the highway later returned to normal.
Legal proceedings in connection with the accident are underway, the OC added.
