Sylhet experienced a brief spell of seismic unrest early Thursday (December 11) as two earthquakes struck the region within just five minutes, according to the European–Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
India’s National Center for Seismology reported that the first tremor was recorded at 2:50:31am with a magnitude of 3.5. Moments later, at 2:55:14am, a second quake measuring 3.3 was felt across parts of the district.
Both quakes originated near the Bangladesh–India border in Sylhet’s Zakiganj upazila. The first epicenter was pinpointed at latitude 24.830 and longitude 92.180 with a depth of 20 km, while the second was located slightly south at latitude 24.790 and longitude 92.210, at a depth of 30 km.
The double tremors came just minutes after a separate 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at 2:54:03am, centered about 6 kilometers north of Mandalay.
No immediate damage or casualties were reported from any of the incidents.
