Two more inmates die while under treatment at DMCH

Two inmates of Keraniganj Central Jail have died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), officials said.

Mohammad Iftekhar Mahmud, 36, died around 9pm on Wednesday after being admitted to the DMCH medicine department following a sudden illness inside the jail on September 19. He was being treated in Ward 601.

A resident of Pirerbagh in Mirpur, Iftekhar was the son of Mahbub Alam and was held as a pretrial detainee at the central jail.

A few hours later, Mohammad Toffazzal Hossain Palash, 38, fell unconscious after becoming ill inside the jail. He was taken to the DMCH emergency department around 10:30pm and was declared dead by doctors at about 11:30pm after examination.

Palash, the son of Ali Hossain of Bagbari in Darus Salam, was also being held as a pretrial detainee. Details of the cases in which the two men were detained were not immediately available.

Habibur Rahman, inspector in charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the deaths and said the bodies had been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

The post-mortems will be conducted after inquest reports are prepared in the presence of an executive magistrate. The bodies will subsequently be handed over to their families following the required formalities.
